Support Staff Policy

Role & Purpose

Support staff at Little Maestros are integral to the functioning of our preschool. From preparing

classrooms to ensuring safety and hygiene, their contribution enables a nurturing and

well-organized environment where children can learn and flourish.

This policy outlines the expectations, responsibilities, and conduct required of all non-teaching

staff, including classroom aides, helpers, housekeeping personnel, transport assistants, and

kitchen support.

Daily Responsibilities

Classroom Readiness

● Support staff must ensure that all learning spaces are clean, safe, and ready before

instructional hours begin.

This includes:

○ Arranging mats, instruments, and materials as per the teacher’s direction

○ Cleaning tables, shelves, and classroom floors

○ Checking for spills, loose objects, or broken items that could cause harm

○ Ensuring fans, lights, and classroom equipment are functioning

Assistance During School Hours

Support staff are expected to:

○ Assist teachers in transitions between activities (e.g., outdoor play, nap time,

snack/lunch)

○ Help manage children calmly and kindly during toilet breaks or accidents

Support children in putting on shoes, zippers, or carrying school bags when

needed

○ Maintain alertness and never leave young children unsupervised, even

momentarily

Conduct & Behaviour

Professionalism

● Support staff must remain cordial, respectful, and cooperative at all times—with

students, teachers, parents, and fellow staff.

● Speaking in a calm, gentle tone with children is mandatory. Harshness, raised voices,

or dismissive gestures are not acceptable.

● Gossiping, arguing, or loud personal conversations during school hours are strictly

prohibited.

Team Etiquette

●  Tasks should be carried out with team spirit and a helpful attitude. Refusal to assist

colleagues or displays of indifference affect the morale and are grounds for review.

●  If unsure about a task or instruction, staff should politely clarify with the teacher or

coordinator, rather than act independently.

Dress Code

●  Neat, clean, and modest attire must be worn. All support staff are required to wear their

ID card during working hours.

● Footwear must be suitable for indoor activity and child-safe.

Child Interaction

Safety & Sensitivity

●  Support staff are never to discipline, threaten, or scold a child. Any behavioral concern

must be reported directly to the teacher.

●

Physical contact should always be appropriate, brief, and professional—for instance,

helping a child who has fallen or is crying.

Never be alone with a child behind closed doors or in a secluded area.

Confidentiality

● Details of any child’s behavior, background, or family must not be discussed among staff

or outsiders. This is a serious breach of trust and policy.

Attendance & Punctuality

Support staff must report to school 15 minutes before the school start time and

remain on duty until all assigned areas are cleared and children are safely handed over.

All leave requests must be submitted in advance (except for emergencies) and approved

by the operations head or coordinator.

Chronic lateness or absenteeism may lead to disciplinary action.

Respect for Property & Resources

● School property—furniture, musical instruments, learning materials—must be handled

with care.

● Any breakage or loss must be reported immediately. Intentional damage or negligence

may lead to deduction from salary or termination.

Support During Events & Emergencies

During school events (Recitals, Annual Day, Guest Visits), support staff may be required

to work outside of normal hours. Advance notice will be provided.

In emergencies, all support staff must be ready to follow instructions for evacuation,

crowd control, first aid assistance, or managing upset children.
